EMERGENCY DRINKING WATER NEWS RELEASE UPDATE #1
July 12, 2024
Hildale/Colorado City drinking water is safe and continues to flow.
Hildale City operates the joint utility system for both Hildale Utah and Colorado City Arizona. On July 11, 2024, at about 5pm, one of our wells (the Academy Well) suffered a failure of the pump and motor mechanism. The seven-year-old pump and motor were removed and examined. It appears the failure is attributed to “wear and usage” of the motor and pump, as they are constantly in use. This well produces nearly a third of our joint utilities system drinking water. The municipalities immediately ordered to stop all OUTDOOR watering, such as lawns and gardens. This order did not apply to pets or animals needing to be watered.
The remaining wells continue to produce, and system capacity is maintaining, but not yet increasing. A new pump has been retrieved through efforts with SHOLZEN PRODUCTS, a great long-term partner. It is anticipated the pump will be installed by Saturday. As required, once the pump is installed, a water sample must be drawn and tested. The water system will be flushed and sanitized. When the test sample is approved, and the pump starts to restore capacity to the system, the outdoor water restriction will be lifted.
Unfortunately, one media outlet reported falsely that INDOOR water was restricted. This is not correct. Drinking water and household use is safe and continues to flow.
Additionally, we anticipate approval from the Utah Department of Natural Resources of a pending water improvement permit to increase our water supplies.
We recognize our dedicated utility, public works, and other staff who have worked without rest or complaint on behalf of the residents of our communities. Their actions, especially under the stress of the current heat wave, are exemplary.
We are grateful to neighboring communities, Washington County, and State agencies who reached out to offer support and assistance.
We particularly are grateful to the residents who have been patient, supportive, and understanding during this changing event.
Thank you.
